The simple , basic concept has remained the same over all those many hundreds of years: a container of some kind collects the water and the level is measured to determine the amount of rainfall Simple! Many of the rain gauges of today are equally basic, some even just a tube that captures rain as it falls. However, there have been many advances in this area as well, and there are a number of different automatic rain gauges.

If its simplicity but efficient you want, a simple tube-like rain gauge for your garden is what you need. If, however, you are a serious weather buff or you have any other reason for a deep interest in following the weather closely, you may be happier with an automatic rain gauge.

An automatic rain gauge has a digital readout. Sensors within the cylinder accurately determine the level of rainfall and transfer that information to the display screen. But this is only the beginning of the changes time have made. You no longer have to go to the gauge to read it and find your information, you can read it from inside your house.

Automatic rain gauges are usually set remotely from the display base. A signal is sent with information attained from the sensors. This is generally given every 10 seconds or so to keep the information that is displayed accurate.

You can most defintely purchase an automatic rai gauge that does exactly that! It will give information about rainfall in the past 24 hours as well as an accumulated amount. These will sometimes have a rain alarm to let you know when it's raining or has rained a certain amount.

There are also a wide variety of other rain gauges that are combined with other weather instruments and measurements. You can get one that gives rain readings as well as indoor and outdoor temperature readings. Others are more complete weather stations that tell you about wind conditions, air pressure and humidity and other information, even forecasting upcoming weather for you!
