Why Measure Rainfall?

Every single one of us is effected by the weather on a daily basis. It is a major factor in determining what clothes we will wear, if we need a coat or jacket, and whether or not we take along an umbrella. It might make it necessary for us to leave to appointments earlier, and will certainly cause the cancellation of some activities sometimes.

These every day, personal effects of the weather on us are important and one of the reasons we watch the weather report, the weather channel or check it on our phones or online on a daily basis. But for some people watching the weather is more than just a matter of knowing what to wear, it's a matter of what to expect, their livelihood or even the safety of others.

There are loads of reasons, a good example would be to measure rainfall. Hearing on the news that a quarter of an inch of rain fell during the day may be interesting information to many, but for some it is actually not just interesting, but critical information.

To measure rainfall accurately, it is essential to use a rain gauge. These are drums, or containers that collect rain, usually from a funnel and give a reading of the amount of rain that has fallen. There are all type of rain gauges, from the type your elementary school child might make in their science class, to top of the line, high tech wireless, self emptying models.

Some of the industries that rely heavily on understanding and following the rainfall in a given region are those involved in agriculture such as farmers and gardeners. Meteorologists need information to share and track for their accumulative research. It's also important to be able to predict flooding in certain areas.

Accurately knowing about rainfall measurements is helpful in all of these reas to determine what steps need to be taken to improve crops, preparation for flooding, etcs. The information can sometimes be very important in determining the long term planting and harvesting of crops.

However, people who measure rainfall don't always do it for such practical purposes and applications. For many, it is simply part of their hobby. It is fascinating for some people to keep track of the amount of rainfall and see what nature has to offer, as well as comparing previous and current year's precipitation.

Every person which enjoys the weather as a hobbie will have an instrument to measure rainfall, be it a standalone rain gauge or a part of a home weather station. The readings from the gauge will be carefully watched, note being taken of both daily rainfall as well as accumulative rainfall.

For those watching the rain for reasons associated with their livelihood, a rain gauge that comes with a rain alarm is an excellent choice. This will let you know when rain measurements reach a certain level, or even when it is raining at all so that you can do what you need to accordingly.
