The Rain Gauge Explored

Isn't it a wonderful thing that this world is designed to keep itself alive and working well. The weather plays an important role in this self renewal. Although the weather can be destructive, this is also a necessary part of the evolution of the planet. One of the most important aspects of the weather that helps in providing life is rainfall.

As we all know rain is the most vital apponent for life on earth. We need it for our crops so we have food to eat. We need it to keep water levels stable, and it is critical for keeping trees, bushes and other plants growing well to provide shade and food, too.

For many people keeping track of rainfall and paying attention to patterns and trends is extremely important. A rain gauge can give information on the amount of rainfall in a given period of time. This information comes in very handy for anyone who works in agriculture or even smaller scale gardeners.

Rain gauges come in many different varieties. The general idea is that rain is collected, and funneled into a drum where it can be measured. This measurement is usually given in millimeters or inches. A rainfall gauge can be as simple as one made in an elementary school science class or can be as advanced and complex as those used by serious weather watchers that have remote displays, rain alarms, and even self emptying buckets.

In order to gauge rain in a given area, a standard rain gauge is most commonly used. This has a funnel that is connected to a graduated cylinder. This is all set ins a larger container so that if the water overflows the excess water can still be caught and measured. If this container is made of glass it is known as a glass rain gauge.

Information about rainfall collected from a weather rain gauge is used for farmers to help determine how much to water their crops. Even your average gardener might use a rain gauge to ensure that they don't over or underwater their lawn or garden.

A rain guage isn't only for people who are interested in what and how the rain nourishes the earth. Meteorologists use them to determine drought. Firefighters can use them to determine the type of help they might get from mother nature in fighting fires.

There are many weather bugs or weather enthusiasts who are fascinated with the weather. They may have home weather stations that include a rain gauge so that they can keep tabs on the amount of rainfall and make predictions about levels of rainfall in a given period. This is an exciting hobby for many people and the rain gauge is an important helper in feeing their excitement about the weather.
